Remember that time your Aunt remodeled her kitchen?  This isn’t that.

Your Aunt may have even said her remodel was a “Masterpiece” or “Spectuacular”, but she was either mistaken or lying.

I know this because I have seen the Naka House, and it proves just how epic a “remodel” can truly be.

In the photos below you’re going to see more of the Naka House and you literally won’t believe your eyes.  This sprawling black-and-white tour-de-force of Abstract Architecture is 100% for real and it is SO COOL!

It isn’t just me that thinks so either, the American Institute of Architects agrees — they chose the Naka House remodel to be their AIA “Home of the Year” in 2012. It’s one of the industry’s most prestigious honors and once you see the innovative, bold design choices made by the team at XTEN Architecture and superbly executed by Nate Wasik and his team over at NWGC, Inc.  you’ll see why The Naka House is more than deserving of the prize title. (BTW – NWGC is Figure 8’s  very own in-house Architecture Consultant – so we’re especially psyched that their getting the recognition they deserve!).

Besides being a sculptural work of Art in it’s own right, the house, located at 3140 Hollyridge Drive, has a rich and complex dialogue with it’s environment.  Utilizing a series of spacious sundecks and walkways, this one-of-a-kind house feels buoyed with an influx natural light, enhancing a floorplan strategically designed to makes the most of the location’s impressive views of Beachwood Canyon to the South/West and Griffith Park Observatory to the North.  It’s the kind of house that’s worth describing, but needs to be experienced in person to truly understand.
Perched on a remote hill, with a West-facing peak, the Naka House is a contemporary wonder and a literal work of art. Naka3

Yes, this is a real house.  And yes, the Hollywood sign is your next door neighbor.
Naka10The monochromatic unity of the interior space is completely immersive and breathtaking.

Every inch of the interior – from the lacquered wooden cabinetry to the epoxy resin floors to the painted metal decks — is a play on white in different finishes and textures.Naka11

Unity meets contrast as soon as you walk outside, with all exterior walls and roofing elegantly overlaid in a smooth black Meoded Venetian plaster system to make the home a case study in the interplay of positive and negative space.

The minimalist aesthetic of the fixtures opens the space to further showcase the stunning design of the surrounding structures.

Indoor-Outdoor spaces are connected with artfully framed views to nature.   Rendered in white surfaces and made out of various textured materials, it’s every bit as awesome as it sounds.

C’mon, you know you want to live here.
